Fishing Heritage

Strangford is a picturesque fishing village perched on the western shore of Strangford Lough, one of the largest sea inlets in the British Isles. This charming harbour settlement has been a working fishing port for centuries, and today offers visitors an authentic taste of coastal life alongside unique Game of Thrones connections.

Door #1 of the Doors of Thrones

When Storm Gertrude toppled trees at the iconic Dark Hedges in 2016, local craftsmen transformed the fallen timber into ten beautifully carved doors depicting scenes from Game of Thrones. The Cuan Hotel and Restaurant in Strangford is proud home to Door #1, making it a must-visit pilgrimage site for fans of the show. Dine beneath intricate carvings while enjoying fresh local seafood.

Strangford Lough Marine Nature Reserve

The lough is one of only three Marine Nature Reserves in the United Kingdom, protecting an extraordinary ecosystem of over 2,000 marine species. The waters are home to gray and harbor seals, porpoises, and an abundance of birdlife. Legend has it there are 365 islands in the lough—one for every day of the year—each supporting unique habitats and wildlife.

"Strangford Lough is one of the most important marine nature reserves in Europe—a living laboratory of biodiversity."— Ulster Wildlife Trust

Working Harbour Heritage

Unlike many villages that have lost their maritime traditions, Strangford remains a working harbour where fishing boats still land their daily catch. Wander the waterfront at dawn to watch the boats return, or simply enjoy the timeless atmosphere of a village that has lived by the sea for generations. The name "Strangford" itself comes from the Old Norse for "strong fjord," a reminder of Viking settlers who recognized the power of these tidal waters.

Gateway to Castle Ward

A short ferry crossing to Portaferry connects you to Castle Ward—the National Trust estate that served as the exterior filming location for Winterfell in Game of Thrones. Combine a visit to Door #1 in Strangford with a journey to where the Stark family home came to life on screen for the ultimate GoT experience.
