Starting Point
Newcastle
The sweeping granite peaks of the Mourne Mountains have inspired poets, novelists, and filmmakers for generations. C.S. Lewis saw giants rising from these ridges. Game of Thrones® found its Haunted Forest in the shadow of Slieve Donard. And Percy French captured their magic in song that echoes through the centuries.
A Landscape of Legend
Rising dramatically from the Irish Sea, the Mourne Mountains are a compact granite range covering just 15 miles by 8 miles, yet containing 12 peaks over 600 metres. The highest, Slieve Donard at 850m, offers views across six counties on a clear day.
The region is now a UNESCO Global Geopark and Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, recognised for its unique geological heritage and stunning landscapes. The famous Mourne Wall, a 22-mile dry-stone wall crossing 15 peaks, was built over 18 years by local craftsmen to protect Belfast's water supply.
Inspiring Stories
"I have seen landscapes, notably in the Mourne Mountains and southwards which under a particular light made me feel that at any moment a giant might raise his head over the next ridge."— C.S. Lewis
