Nestled at the foot of Slieve Martin on the shores of Carlingford Lough, Rostrevor has earned its reputation as Ireland's adventure capital. This charming village combines world-class mountain biking trails with literary heritage, traditional music, and artisan craft drinks—a unique blend that draws adventurers and culture-seekers from around the world.
Mountain Biking Paradise
Rostrevor's MTB trails at Kilbroney Park have earned an international reputation as Ireland's premier mountain biking destination. The trail network offers something for every ability: the Red Trail spans 27-30km with the optional Slievemartin summit extension, while the Black Trail delivers 19km of technical challenges. For gravity enthusiasts, the purpose-built downhill trails—including Mega Mission and On the Pulse, Ireland's first official downhill trail—provide world-class descents.
"That part of Rostrevor which overlooks Carlingford Lough is my idea of Narnia."— C.S. Lewis
The famous Kodak Corner viewpoint on the ascent offers spectacular views across to the Cooley Peninsula. Bike Mourne operates at the trailhead, offering bike hire, e-bikes, and uplift services. Best of all, the trails are open 24 hours and completely free to ride.
C.S. Lewis & The Narnia Connection
Rostrevor holds a special place in literary history. C.S. Lewis himself wrote that this area overlooking Carlingford Lough was his vision of Narnia. Today, visitors can walk the Narnia Trail in Kilbroney Park—a magical woodland walk featuring sculptures and scenes from the beloved Chronicles. The Rostrevor Inn celebrates this connection with stunning Narnia murals and two themed family rooms, occasionally hosting talks by C.S. Lewis expert Professor Jerry Root.
Traditional Music Hub
Rostrevor pulses with traditional Irish music. The village is home to the legendary Fiddler's Green festival, drawing the finest folk artists. Year-round, Crawford's Bar hosts authentic sessions every Wednesday (songs by the fireside) and Sunday (full traditional session). It's one of the best places in Ireland to experience live trad music in an intimate, genuine setting.
Killowen Distillery
Northern Ireland's smallest distillery produces exceptional whiskey and gin using traditional flame-fed copper pot stills. The "Meet the Makers" tour (£36 per person) offers an intimate look at their craft process. It's a must-visit for spirits enthusiasts seeking something truly artisanal.
Walking & The Mourne Way
Beyond biking, Rostrevor offers excellent walking. The Cloughmore Trail is a scenic 2.5-mile loop from Fiddler's Green, passing the legendary giant's stone with panoramic views over Carlingford Lough. The village also marks the western endpoint of the Mourne Way, a 42km (26-mile) long-distance trail traversing the mountain range.
