Character

Unspoilt Beauty

Annalong is where the Mournes feel closest to the sea. This quiet coastal village has changed little over the decades, retaining an authenticity that's increasingly rare. Fishing boats still work from the harbour, the cornmill still turns, and the dramatic scenery remains as unspoilt as ever.

Gateway to Slieve Binnian

Carrick Little Car Park, just above Annalong, is the starting point for one of the Mournes' finest mountain walks. The route to Slieve Binnian passes the legendary Blue Lough before ascending to the summit with its distinctive granite tors. Many consider this the most scenic mountain approach in the entire range.

The views from Binnian's summit stretch across the entire Mourne range, down to the Silent Valley reservoir, and out across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man and beyond.

The Coastal Path

The Annalong Coastal Path is one of the most photogenic walks in Ireland. Following the rocky shoreline with the Mournes rising dramatically behind, it's a walk that rewards at every turn. The path offers easy terrain with spectacular scenery—perfect for photographers and families alike.

The contrast is remarkable: wild Atlantic waves crashing on granite shores while the majestic peaks of the Mournes tower immediately inland. Few places offer such dramatic mountain-meets-sea landscapes.

Working Harbour

Annalong's small harbour remains a working fishing port, lending the village an authenticity that tourism hasn't erased. The boats here supply restaurants throughout the region, including the renowned Mourne Seafood Bar. There's something deeply satisfying about knowing the fish on your plate was landed just hours before.

The harbour itself is picturesque, with colourful boats against a backdrop of mountains—a scene that encapsulates everything special about the Mourne coast.

Historic Cornmill

The Annalong Cornmill, dating from 1830, has been carefully restored and offers a window into the region's agricultural past. Powered by the Annalong River, the mill demonstrates traditional grain milling techniques and stands as a testament to the area's heritage.
